PROGEN Brings Women’s Health Outreach to Pulau Perhentian
PULAU PERHENTIAN, TERENGGANU — The Persatuan Obstetrik & Ginekologi Nasional KKM (PROGEN), in collaboration with the Terengganu Obstetrics & Gynaecology Society (TOGS), Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ), Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah (PKD) Besut and LPPKN Cawangan Kuala Terengganu, organised the Program Outreach Kesihatan Komuniti ke Pulau Perhentian 2026 from 6 to 8 August 2026.
The initiative aimed to bring essential women’s health information and basic gynaecological services closer to the island community, particularly women and adolescent girls who may have limited access to specialist healthcare services.
The programme focused on increasing awareness of gynaecological and reproductive health, providing basic health screenings and examinations and promoting education on menstrual health, HPV prevention and general women’s health.
A total of 69 participants took part in the health outreach activities. The programme featured health education sessions and specialist consultations, supported by exhibition booths covering gynaecological oncology, uro-gynaecology, adolescent health, contraception and HPV.
Among the key activities was HPV DNA screening, with 17 participants undergoing screening. Health counselling and contraceptive services were also provided to 20 participants, while antenatal assessments were conducted for pregnant women from the local community.
The outreach also placed emphasis on adolescent health through Girls Circle, a dedicated session involving 15 girls. The interactive session provided an opportunity for adolescent participants to learn and engage in discussions about women’s and reproductive health in a supportive environment.
To encourage community participation, the programme also included a colouring competition for children, attracting 50 participants from Kampung Pulau Perhentian. Participants received prizes, certificates and souvenirs, while a lucky draw added another element of engagement for the community.
Through this initiative, PROGEN and its partners demonstrated their commitment to extending women’s health education and services beyond conventional healthcare settings. The programme also strengthened collaboration among professional societies, healthcare institutions and community health partners in supporting the health and wellbeing of women and families in island communities.
The successful outreach reflects PROGEN’s continued efforts to promote accessible, preventive and community-based women’s healthcare, ensuring that health awareness and early screening remain within reach of communities across Malaysia.
